Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy
What is Craniosacral Therapy?
CST has developed from clinical experience within the field of osteopathy. It is a hands-on therapy which is thought to assist the body’s natural capacity for self-repair. CST is non-diagnostic.
The mindset of CST practitioners and their beliefs about health, illness and bodily functions are different from those of conventional medical practitioners.
CST is not provided on the NHS - all those who have sessions do so by self-referral. Practitioners working with CST have supported clients with:
stress related conditions
What happens during a CST session?
If you were to have a session of CST you would remain fully clothed and usually lie on a treatment table. During treatment I would make light contact on the body - see photo. The head and the sacrum are the two main contact points allowing direct contact with the craniosacral system. Sessions can take between 40 minutes to one hour.
Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy has its origins in osteopathy, except unlike osteopathy it does not involve manipulation of the body. Since the 1970s it has developed as a therapy in its own right.
The biodynamic approach is based on information about the body’s subtle energy system and physiology which shows that all cells, tissues and body structures (including bones) in a healthy body express rhythmic movements fundamental to life. These appear as subtle sensations and movements felt by the sensitive hands of a trained and competent therapist.
When these movements become blocked or restricted – as a result of life’s pressures and buffetings – then pain and fatigue can be experienced. The aim of Craniosacral Therapy is to enable the body to release these areas of restriction in its own way and at its own pace.
This can have profound physical and psychological benefits, leading to self-correction of symptoms on the one hand, and restoration of overall balance of mind and body on the other.
What can I expect when I come for treatment?
All treatments last for 50 minutes unless we agree to have a longer session. Conducted in a relaxing atmosphere and mainly in silence, my approach is non-judgmental. There is no need for any embarrassment or fear of what might happen or what I might think. Treatment sessions are completely confidential.
At the first session I will require a full medical history – I shall send you a questionnaire to complete beforehand and we can talk things over when we first meet.
You will receive an initial treatment, and we will then agree subsequent sessions according to your specific needs. The sessions are done with you remaining fully clothed, lying down on the treatment table. I work with light, sensitive touch without manipulations or pressures (unlike a massage, for example).
Through my hands I may become aware of what is going on in your body. You may become aware of heat, gentle pulsations or tingling in your body, and you may feel a deep sense of relaxation. These changes in themselves can begin to reduce tension and stress.
What ages can be treated?
All ages may be treated, from babies and young children to the elderly, and everyone in between. As it involves such a gentle approach, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is particularly suitable for young children, people who may be particularly sensitive, and anyone in a delicate state.
It may also be of great benefit during pregnancy and following birth, as it helps to enhance the general health and vitality of your body.
Even if you are disabled or constrained in your movements, this therapy can work well. Moreover, if you are a busy working person, one added benefit is that a session gives you an opportunity for some complete relaxation and ‘down time’, helping you defragment the complexities of your life, as well as addressing whatever ailments you might have.
My Personal Approach
I offer a calm healing environment in comfortable surroundings to help your body to settle. This provides the optimum conditions to enable the body to resolve underlying health issues. In my experience of working with wholistic therapies such as biodynamic craniosacral work, when the body feels safe and comfortable and I am fully present with my client, then shifts can occur, sometimes on different levels.
